Lillesand, T. M.; Kiefer, R. W.; Chipman, J. W.
This book was designed to be primarily used in two ways: as a textbook in introductory courses in remote sensing and image interpretation, and as a reference for the burgeoning number of practitioners who use geospatial information and analysis in their work. In this edition, the basics of analogue image analysis are still provided, but greater emphasis is placed on digitally based systems and analysis techniques. Hence, the subject matter contained in this book ranges from the principles of airphoto interpretation and photogrammetry, to a description of next generation satellite systems and recent developments in digital image processing. The close interaction among the related areas of remote sensing, GIS, GPS digital image processing and environmental modelling is also discussed. New or expanded coverage is provided on such topics as the GPS Wide-Area Augmentation System, digital cameras, new satellite systems, image interpretation for natural disaster assessment, hyperspectral sensing, lidar, change detection, and biophysical modelling via remote sensing data. A new appendix is also included on radiation measurement concepts, terminology and units, which could prove to be very useful to those interested in the more quantitative aspects of remote sensing. Similarly, a new appendix is added dealing with sample coordinate transformation and resampling procedures. Additional appendix material includes sources of remote sensing data and information, remote sensing periodicals, online glossaries, and online tutorials. This edition also has many new line drawings and photographic illustrations, and a greatly expanded number of colour plates.
