Tutorial: How to Connect GeoServer to PostGIS Spatial Datasets

This beginner GeoServer tutorial explains how to connect to PostGIS spatial datasets by setting up GeoServer stores and layers.  To complete this tutorial you should either have a PostgreSQL with PostGIS database server installed locally, or have the necessary connection information for a remotely hosted database server.  This tutorial also requires that you have pre-existing spatial datasets contained within your PostGIS database.

If you do not have spatial data already in your PostGIS database, sample data can be downloaded here, to add the data to your database please complete our tutorial on ‘Importing Shapefile GIS Data into PostgreSQL’ using 4326 as the SRID. 

This tutorial was designed around locally installed PostgreSQL/PostGIS database servers, but for those individuals loading from remotely hosted servers should replace ‘localhost’ with the necessary host information.  To start off we will need to login to the GeoServer Web Admin Interface which is located athttp://localhost:8080/geoserver/web.  Enter the proper username and password to access the internal administrator menu options.

Setting up a GeoServer PostGIS Store


On the left hand side under the Data menu, click on the Stores link.  This should bring up a list of all the existing stores which are providing data to your GeoServer.

Click on Add new Store, and then select PostGIS – PostGIS Database.  For this tutorial we will be adding our store to the existing Workspace called cite, select cite in the Workspace* drop-down menu.  For Data Source Name* enter ‘PostGIS_Dataset’.  Optionally you can enter a description of the Store, such as ‘PostGIS spatial datasets’.  Leave the checkbox next to Enabled.

Now continuing on to the Connection Parameters section.  Leave dbtype* set to ‘postgis’, host* ‘localhost’ and port* ‘5432’.  Note: if your server is configured to run on a different port then update accordingly.  Next, enter the name of your PostGIS enabled database.  You can leave schema set to ‘public’ unless your server is configured differently.  For username enter ‘postgres’ and provide the postgres user password in the passwd field.  The remainder of the settings can be left as default.  Scroll down to the bottom and click Save if all settings look appropriate.

Setting up a GeoServer PostGIS Layer


After clicking the save button on your new GeoServer Store, it will take you to the New Layer chooser menu which should display a list of your PostGIS spatial datasets.  This list is composed of tables which contain the geometry data type that also have a reference entry within the PostGIS system table named ‘geometry_columns’.  If for some reason your spatial table does not contain a reference in the geometry_columns table, you will have to manually add it before it will become available for publishing under GeoServer.

Note: replace ‘tablename’ and ‘the_geom’ with the correct name of your existing spatial table and spatial data column name.

Scroll through the list of Layer names and when you’ve found the Layer you wish to setup, click the Publish button.

The most important information for GeoServer Layer setup is store in the Coordinate Reference Systems section.  If your layer has a blank value under Native SRS, you will have to define your projection manually by clicking the Find button next to Declared SRS.  For global data using the WGS 84 projection with code 4326 is recommended.  For more localized datasets you must browse through the list of supported projections to find the one that is correct for your dataset.  Once you have found the correct projection in the list, add it to the Declared SRS by clicking on the code number.  You should now see a value such as EPSG:4326.

Now that the Coordinate Reference System has been defined we need to define the bounds or spatial extent of your dataset.  Scroll down to the Bounding Boxes section and click the Compute from data button underneath Native Bounding Box.  Then scroll down further and click the Compute from native bounds button found underneath Lat/Lon Bounding Box.  If you set your Declared SRS to EPSG:4326 then these values will appear to be the same because the WGS 84 projection is notated using Latitude and Longitude coordinates.  Scroll down and click the Save button to save your PostGIS GeoServer Layer settings.  This should take you back to the list of all Layers published by your GeoServer, you should see your new PostGIS layer as follows:

To confirm that your new PostGIS Layer is working properly, click the Layer Preview on the left hand side of the GeoServer Web Admin Interface Menu.  Scroll through your list of publish layers to find your new PostGIS Layer, and preview it using OpenLayers.  Pan and zoom into North America, if everything was a success it should look like the image below.

Your new PostGIS Layer is now published and ready for use within future web mapping applications such as OpenLayers.  Users should now have a greater understanding of how to setup a GeoServer PostGIS Store as well as how to publish their own spatial datasets stored within a PostgreSQL/PostGIS database.

The best way to learn ArcMap is to try it yourself. This tutorial guides you through some basic ArcMap skills as you create and print a set of maps for a county that is planning to expand its airport.
Residents of the county have identified several issues they are concerned about. These include noise affecting schools and houses near the airport and increased traffic along major roads. In this tutorial, you’ll first create and print a map showing schools near the airport. Then you’ll place this map—along with two other maps that show land use surrounding the airport and population density for the county—on a wall-sized poster for display.
In the tutorial, you’ll learn how to:
• Display map features.
• Add data to your map.
• Edit geographic data.
• Work with data tables.
• Query and select geographic features.
• Create a summary graph.
• Layout and print a map.
There are five exercises. Each exercise takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete. You can work through the entire tutorial or complete each lesson one at a time.

Viewing data in ArcGIS for geological applications

ArcGIS is a powerful desktop mapping application which can be used to view data in Shapefile, Personal Geodatabase and File Geodatabase formats.

The steps covered here are intended to help you load Shapefile data into ArcGIS and perform simple visualization of that data. If you require any further guidance on using ArcGIS then please contact your Site Representative who will be able to point you to resources within your own institution. ArcGIS has information that can be accessed from the Help menu and there are learning resources available from the ESRI Virtual Campus

1. Accessing ArcGIS

ArcGIS, produced by ESRI, is available to UK academic institutions which are licensed under the CHEST/ESRI Agreement. Further details can be found at EDUSERV CHEST's web pages:http://www.eduserv.org.uk/lns/agreements/esri. Not all institutions hold licenses under this agreement, in which case ArcGIS may not be available.
Instructions for starting ArcGIS will vary depending on how it is installed at your institution so you will need to find out how to run it locally. In Windows, a program can usually be run by either double clicking on an icon on the desktop, or by locating the program under the Windows Start menu. The ArcGIS program group may be at the following location: Start -> Programs -> ArcGIS
The ArcGIS program suite consists of a number of sub-programs; this document covers ArcMap and ArcCatalog only.


2. Preview and Prepare Data in ArcCatalog

When you download the shapefile data from Geology Digimap you will see that there are four component files to each layer and up to eleven layers per tile. These files need to be managed carefully as if the components are separated or renamed different things then the shapefile will not work. ArcCatalog provides an environment in which you can manage these files more easily, treating he component files as a single entity.
We strongly recommend that if you use ArcCatalog to move or rename shapefiles. You can also use ArcCatalog to establish a spatial reference for the data. This is stored in a separate .prj file not provided in the download. This is not necessary for the shapefile to display properly though it will help if you want to use the geology data with other different kinds of data.
ArcCatalog can be run from the ArcGIS programs group, usually: Start -> Programs -> ArcGIS -> ArcCatalog
ArcCatalog main Interface
After the ArcCatalog splash screen, the main ArcCatalog Interface will appear. Essentially you navigate to the location of your GIS data using the left panel and use the tabbed panels at right to find or change information about the dataset.
The first step in using ArcCatalog is to establish a link to your data held as Shapefiles. To do this click on the connect to folder icon connect_to_folder_icon.png highlighted in the image above. A dialogue showing the windows directory tree will appear which you should use to navigate to the folder containing your data, select the folder and then click OK, adding an entry to the Catalog Tree. To see the full contents of this now connected folder, simply click the + node to expand the tree. Doing so should give you something like this:
You can at this point assign a spatial reference to the data. To do this, right click on a shapefile and select Properties, which will bring up the Shapefile Properties form.  Go to the XY Coordinate System tab and click on the Select... button to select a predefined coordinate system.
Navigate through the folders:
Projected Coordinate Systems > National Grids > Europe > British National Grid.prj
Select this file and click Add. Finally click Apply and then OK to return to ArcCatalog; this step should be repeated for each of your Shapefile datasets.
Move on to the next section to see how to open up the shapefiles in ArcMap, this part of ArcGIS can be accessed directly from ArcCatalog by clicking on the ArcMap Icon: arccatalog_arcmap_icon.png

3. Viewing data in ArcMap

ArcMap sits at the heart of ArcGIS and is used for all map-based tasks including cartography, spatial analysis and editing.
After the splash screen, the main ArcMap interface will appear.
The ArcMap interface consists of a table of contents on the left and a large panel to the right known as the data frame. Above these are a selection of drop-down menus and buttons which allow access to the various functions of ArcGIS. To add data to the data frame, click on the Add Dataadd_data_icon.png button located on the standard toolbar which will allow you to navigate to your data.

If you didn't use ArcCatalog before you opened up ArcMap then you will need to connect to your data folder to make finding your data more easily. Click on the connect to folder icon connect_to_folder_icon.pngand then navigate to the folder that contains your data. Highlight your folder and then click OK, you  will now be able to navigate directly to this folder every time you wan to add data.

Add in the shapefiles you have downloaded, you can use Ctrl or Shift keys to select multiple files at once:
To turn a layer on or off, simply click the tick box beside each layer. The properties of an ArcMap layer are accessed through the Layer Properties form. To access this form, double click on a layer item in the table of contents, or select a layer, and then right-click, and from the context menu choose, Properties.

4. Applying the BGS legend Colours

Although there are many properties associated with a layer we are perhaps most interested in setting how our data is drawn in ArcMap. To do this, click on the Symbology tab in the Layer Properties.
The symbology options available will vary depending on whether the layer is a point, line or polygon. You can manually edit the symbology but there are AVL files provided in your download that let you apply the official BGS Colour Scheme.
On the Layer Properties form, under the Symbology tab, click the Import button to bring up the Import Symbology form.

Set the radio button to Import symbology definition from an ArcView 3 legend file (*.avl): and then click the open file button to navigate to the AVL file; there is one for each shapefile in the data downloaded from Geology Digimap. Ensure that the lower left radio button panel is set to Complete symbology definition and then click OK.
At the Import Symbology Matching Dialog ensure that the Value Field drop-down for LEX_ROCK is also set to LEX_ROCK, and then click OK, returning you to the main Layer Properties form with the symbology applied. Note that for linear feature layers the Value Field should be Features not LEX_ROCK.
Finally click, Apply to return to ArcMap; repeat this process for the other layers to finish your geology map.

A full explanation of ArcMap's visualisation, Analysis and Editing functionality is beyond the scope of this document. However more detailed tutorials and information may be provided by your own institution. Every installation of ArcGIS comes with a number of ESRI digital books in PDF format which provide comprehensive coverage of ArcCatalog and ArcMap. To gain access to these you should contact the person who setup ArcGIS at your institution. Another alternative is the ESRI virtual campus which provides a number of tutorials on ArcGIS.

Lesson 1:Introduction to GIS modeling and Python


Overview

Welcome to Geography 485. Over the next ten weeks you'll work through four lessons and a final project dealing with ArcGIS automation in Python. Each lesson will contain readings, examples, and projects. Since the lessons are two weeks long, you should plan between 20 - 24 hours of work to complete them, although this number may vary depending on your prior programming experience. See the Course Schedule section of this syllabus, below, for a schedule of the lessons and course projects.
As with GEOG 483 and GEOG 484, the lessons in this course are project-based with key concepts embedded within. However, because of the nature of computer programming, there is no way this course can follow the step-by-step instruction design of the previous courses. You will probably find the course to be more challenging than the others. For that reason, it is more important than ever that you stay on schedule and take advantage of the course message boards and private e-mail. It's quite likely that you will get stuck somewhere during the course, so before getting hopelessly frustrated, please seek out help from me or your classmates!
I hope that by now that you have reviewed our Orientation and Syllabus for an important course site overview. Before we begin our first project, let me share some important information about a related ESRI course.

ESRI Virtual Campus Courses Using Python in ArcGIS Desktop 10 

There is a free Esri Virtual Campus course Using Python in ArcGIS Desktop 10 that introduces a lot of the same things you'll learn this quarter in Geog 485. The course consists of a one-hour recorded seminar and a walkthrough exercise. If you want to get a head start, or you feel you want some reinforcement of what we're learning from a different point of view, it would be worth your time to complete this Virtual Campus course.
All you need in order to access this course is an Esri Global Account, which you can create for free. You do not need to obtain an access code from Penn State.
The video moves very quickly and covers a range of concepts that we'll spend 10 weeks studying in depth, so don't worry if you don't understand it all immediately. You might find it helpful to watch the video again near the end of Geog 485 to review what you've learned.

Adding an AutoCAD file to an ArcMap Project

AutoCAD files can be directly added to an ArcMap project. When saving your .dwg file in AutoCAD
make sure that there are no spaces in the file name, for example Autocadfile.dwg. Save the .dwg in
one of your ArcMap project folders. In this case we will add an Ordnance Survey .dwg file to our
ArcMap project.

Open the .mxd project that you want to add the AutoCAD file to. Select Add Data and navigate to
the AutoCAD file you want to add. Select the .dwg file and click Add.

Tutorial: Modelbuilder for ArcGIS + Data

In general terms, a model is a representation of reality. A model represents only those factors that are important to your work flow and creates a simplified, manageable view of the real world.

ModelBuilder is an interface used to conduct geographic processing or geoprocessing functions in ArcGIS. It is part of ArcGIS’s core technology. Visually, it looks a lot like a flow chart. The power of ModelBuilder is that it allows users to automate geoprocessing functions on their data easily without writing any code. The visual nature of the interface makes it very easy to design and follow workflows and makes it a great tool for teaching students.

What is geoprocessing?

Geoprocessing is based on a framework of data transformation. A typical geoprocessing tool performs an operation on an ArcGIS dataset (such as a shapefile, feature class, raster, or table) and produces a new dataset as the result of the tool.

Why build models?

Building a model helps you manage and automate your geoprocessing work flow. Managing processes and their supporting data can be difficult without the aid of a model.

It is easiest to think about ModelBuilder like a mathematical equation. There is an input or multiple inputs of data, an operation is performed on the input data that alters it in a certain way, and the data is returned as a new output.
