Esri Certification Exams - Are you ready?

There has been a lot of talk about Esri’s new technical certifications on various listservs, boards and blogs. While certification is nothing new to many of the disciplines GIS specialist/professionals work with such as IT, Planning, Project Management, Surveying, Tax Assessment, and so on, it is relatively new to the GIS field. Tripp Corbin of Keck & Wood tells us more about vendor-specific certification exams.

There has been a lot of talk about Esri’s new technical certifications on various listservs, boards and blogs. While certification is nothing new to many of the disciplines GIS specialist/professionals work with such as IT, Planning, Project Management, Surveying, Tax Assessment, and so on, it is relatively new to the GIS field.
GISPpinproofThe GISP certification from the GISCI has only be around for about 10 years. It currently doesn’t include an exam. Expect that to change. GISCI is working on an exam which is tentatively set for release in 2015. Esri’s certifications have only been around for a couple of years. Because certification is new to GIS, many in the GIS industry have had little if any exposure to taking a certification exam. As a result, they are unsure of what to expect or how to prepare.
During the course of my career, I have taken and passed several certification exams which includes Esri’s Desktop Associate exam as well as several Microsoft Certifications, Esri Authorized Instructor exams, a CompTIA Certification, and the Certified Floodplain Manager exam. Most recently I took the Esri Enterprise Administration Associate beta exam for ArcGIS 10.1. Still waiting to get word on if I passed that one.  It is my hope that I can offer a little insight into what you can expect when you take an Esri Certification exam and some suggestions on how to prepare.
One thing all technicial vendor certification exams have in common, they are designed to test your overall familiarity with the application you are being tested on.  This means they will get into the weeds about specific functions, tools, toolbars, and workflows with the software. This has been true of the Microsoft and Esri Certification exams I have taken. You may see questions asking the location of commonly used tools and menus or how you might access commonly used functionality. So you need to make sure you know where these are located, what their names are and basic functionality associated with them. In the case of ArcGIS Desktop, this might include things like how do you autohide the catalog window or dock the search window or knowing what toolbar the Find tool is located on and so on. Oh and you will not have access to the software when you take the exam. Some questions will have graphics attached but you will not be able to open ArcMap to find that tool you use with the binocular icon.
You also need to make sure you are familiar with the vendor recommended workflows. In the case of the Esri certification exams, these would be the ones Esri recommends as best practices for ArcGIS for Desktop or Server or SDE which might be different from what you do in your shop.  When answering workflow questions make sure to keep in mind that the answers will be limited to the software and vendor you are being tested on. So if you use a third party add-on, such as Xtools to perform some task, you will need to make sure you how to do that with plain ArcGIS or one of the Esri Extensions.   One of the best ways to make sure you are familiar with the recommended workflows, is to go back through books from any of the Esri courses you may have taken. The exercises are especially helpful. They will generally follow the workflows and methods Esri recommends as best practices.
Another thing that is common to every certification exam I have taken are questions that test your knowledge of the vendor or industries’ lingo or terms. You need to make sure when you see terms, such as Feature Class, Feature Dataset, Layer, Topology, Geodatabase Topology and so on, that you know what they mean in the Esri world. My experience as an Instructor has shown me that many shops develop their own version GIS terms and lingo. For example I have seen shops where every data layer they have is refered to as a shapefile. It doesn’t matter if it is a feature class stored in a Geodatabase or some other format. Everything is referred to as a shapefile. This will get you in trouble when you sit for a certification exam.
Esri’s online GIS dictionary  (http://resources.arcgis.com/glossary) is a great resource to make sure you know what Esri means when it uses specific terms. Once again, reviewing any training materials you have from past classes is also a good idea. Using these to make a study sheet or flash cards can provide a great exam prep tool.
I have found that most ArcGIS Users tend to specialize in specific areas, be it parcel mapping, transportation analysis, data collection or so on. This means they are experts at using the tools they use on a regular basis but often forget or are unaware of the other capabilities of ArcGIS software. This will make passing one of the Esri certification exams difficult. They are not profession specific but instead test you on the entire software package.
As you prepare for the exam make sure you take the time to look at tools and functions outside your specific area of expertise. A good example of this is projections and coordinate systems. Many ArcGIS Users use the same data day after day. It is all in the same coordinate system so they do not have to worry about it. However, one of the powerful functions  of ArcGIS is to project data from one coordinate system to another. There is a good possibility that you will encounter some questions related to projecting data in ArcGIS as well some of the components that define a coordinate system such as datum or ellipsoid. Again going back through old training materials is a good way to review.
A few other tips for preparing for an exam:
  1. Make sure to get a good night’s rest before the exam. Don’t over cram.
  2. Take practice exams. This can be from an online service or use the sample questions on the Esri website and the exam specific skills measured as a guide to make your own. Review questions from Esri classes also make good practice questions.
  3. Plan to go through the exam 3 or 4 times. During the first pass answer the questions you know for sure. Then come back and hit the ones you narrowed down to a couple of possible answers. Lastly hit the ones you have no idea. Remember an unanswered question is automatically wrong.
  4. Don’t force yourself to go for a higher level exam than you are ready for. Don’t feel you have to take the professional level exam even if you have been using the software for a long time.
  5. Remember theses exams are based on ArcGIS 10 or 10.1. So if you have not been using those versions, do not take the exam. I can almost promise you will not pass.
Esri and a couple of vendors have begun to develop exam prep classes. This includes my company eGIS Associates. These classes can provide a great opportunity to review functionality and provide a chance to identify areas where your knowledge may be weak. Many folks have reported these classes to be extremely helpful as they prepared for the exams.

ENVI Geoservices and ArcGIS® Online – A New Paradigm for Image Analytics

The development and release of ArcGIS® Online by Esri® ushered in a new era of GIS access and availability. ArcGIS Online allows organizations and individuals to manage and display their map data on the internet via an easy-to-use interface. This has been useful for GIS professionals who have been overloaded with small requests for geographic information by allowing their users to self-serve data and maps that have been developed and published by the GIS analyst. It also allows users in the field to display ground truth information that may be collected as a series of GPS points or geographic notes. According to Esri, “In addition, non-GIS professionals, such as knowledge workers who have a need for GIS, now have a way to quickly create maps from the unstructured information they work with in spreadsheets and text files and share these maps with others who can access them on any device. This type of on-demand and self-serve mapping frees up GIS professionals from having to respond to constant requests for maps and instead concentrate on making and publishing authoritative information products.” (Esri, June, 2012)
Along with map and display capabilities, ArcGIS Online comes equipped with the ability to conduct geo-processing tasks, or geoservices. Esri currently provides geocoding and network analysis geoservices, among others. Users with an ArcGIS for Server instance can also publish their own geoservices and models from the Esri software suite and consume them via ArcGIS Online. This means that customized workflows can be distributed via ArcGIS Online for consumption by non-technical users in the field. These services can be also be integrated into custom interfaces developed using the ArcGIS Web Mapping API’sor the ArcGIS Mobile Runtime SDK.

Exelis Visual Information Solutions has worked very closely with Esri for years to develop interoperable solutions to leverage advanced image analytics from ENVI from within the ArcGIS ecosystem. Along with both desktop and server side interoperability, ENVI is now able to take advantage of the ArcGIS Online platform to expose ENVI geoservices in the cloud. Implemented using the ENVI Services Engine and the ArcGIS API for JavaScript, the app queries and consumes Landsat image services to run a number of different analysis tasks. Results are delivered back to the thin client as a visual representation, with links to download the processed datasets available if needed. Not only can this type of implementation run analysis and deliver results on remote data, the time-aware nature of the Landsat Image Service allows for time aware analysis to be conducted such as change detection, or in this case, NDVI analysis over time.

This example of ENVI image analysis being run on image service data from the ArcGIS online environment is a snapshot of the future. In the same way that the storing and viewing of map products has migrated to the internet, so too will the analysis of large data be executed on large servers in remote locations and consumed via thin clients and mobile apps. ArcGIS Online Download Gratuito de Imagens de Satélite das Últimas 4 Décadas


Quero, com grande prazer, documentar e divulgar uma excelente iniciativa que a empresa ESRI, criadora dos softwares proprietários da família ArcGIS, tomou este ano ao disponibilizar, de forma gratuita, imagens do satélite Landsat dos últimos 40 anos.
Isso mesmo! Imagens de satélite, gratuitas, das últimas quatro décadas! :D
A novidade permite o acesso a um patrimônio de décadas de imagens geradas pela NASA e pelo Departamento do Interior Americano (DOI). Como já citado, o acesso aos dados é gratuito através do site ArcGIS Online.
Entre outras coisas, este projeto permitirá expandir a capacidade de monitorar mudanças na paisagem ao redor do mundo. As imagens Landsat têm resolução espacial de 30 (trinta) metros e, portanto, podem ser aplicadas no estudo das mudanças climáticas, meio ambiente, ocupação de território, alterações na vegetação, só para citar alguns exemplos. (Recomendo que leia: Desmistificando o Sensoriamento Remoto)
A ESRI desenvolveu uma página interativa que utiliza os produtos de imagem Landsat para fornecer um ponto de partida para entender as mudanças na Terra ao longo dos anos.
Recebi esta notícia através do excelente portal Geo.NET (recomendo a visita e cadastro), que publicou uma notíciasobre este assunto.

Comment accéder aux données disponibles sur un serveur WFS ou WMS ?

  • Un outil propre à ArcGIS permet de visualiser des données de serveurs WMS :
    • Aller dans "Ajout de données"
    • Puis "Serveurs SIG"
    • Et "Ajouter un serveur WMS"
    • Enfin, saisir l'adresse du serveur WMS
    • On peut alors visualiser les couches disponibles
    • Cliquer sur "OK"
    • Choisir la connexion au serveur nouvellement créée
    • Cliquer deux fois sur "Ajouter"
Les couches sont téléchargées depuis le serveur et apparaissent dans la table des matières et sur la vue

Attention : il semble que l'outil d'ESRI plante beaucoup, surtout sur ArcGIS 9.1. L'utilisation de l'outil présenté ci-dessous est donc vivement recommandée.
  • Un outil plus évolué et apparemment plus fiable, produit par Carbon Portal et téléchargeable gratuitement, permet d'importer des couches en WMS, mais aussi en WFS et GML :

Il s'agit d'une barre d'outils pour ArcGIS 9.x qui permet d'ajouter facilement des données disponibles sur les serveurs cartographiques : CarbonArc. Cet outil est disponible après enregistrement (gratuit) sur leur site.

Connecting to OS OnDemand web map service (WMS) through ESRI software



OS OnDemand is Ordnance Survey's web map service, delivering the most up to date map data directly into an organisation from our database. It provides a simple way to access our trusted mapping and local information, giving you a single view of the data across your entire organisation. So it doesn't matter if you're sat side by side or at opposite ends of the country, you can be sure you're viewing the same information. OS OnDemand allows you to quickly pan and zoom, letting you view the mapping in great detail, as well as combining data that's relevant to your business.

OS OnDemand is compatible with most GIS software packages and these videos show you how to connect to the service through some of those packages including ESRI.

To use the software, the first step needed is to map to OS OnDemand through ArcCatalog. Once in ArcCatalog you will need to find the GIS server and then add WMS server. Copy in the url given to you as part of the welcome information so that you can access OS OnDemand and then click get layers. You will then be prompted for a username and password. The available layers will now be shown. The OS OnDemand WMS will now appear on the list of GIS servers. You can use the properties field to change the name of the WMS if you want.

You will now need to open ArcMap to view the OS OnDemand WMS data feed. You will be prompted to add the map layers by selecting the OS OnDemand server.

You will then be able to:
• pick what datasets you want to show
• zoom into the map to see your different map layers at different scales.
• lay your own information, such as points lines and features on top of the map.
• change how the information is presented using your GIS functionality.

arcOrama: 100 lignes ou moins

Esri lance aujourd'hui même le concours 100 lignes ou moins. Ce concours est destiné aux développeurs Javascript. Son objet est de développer l'application la plus cool en moins de 100 lignes et utilisant l'API Javascript pour ArcGIS.

Job Responsibilities:
We are building our Geospatial Solutions and Visualization service area and have an immediate vacancy for a Junior/Intermediate GIS Analyst with a passion for GIS and an interest in supporting sustainability, planning, environmental assessment and design. We strive to provide elegant solutions for a diverse array of topic areas such as climate and energy strategies, official community plans, and environmental impact assessments. As a GIS analyst, you would be working with other GIS team members to create a wide array of mapping and analysis products ranging from environmental network analysis to land use plans and 3D visualization in support of both our planning and design teams as well as for other Golder offices, which are located throughout the world. This position is available in either the Vancouver or Nanaimo offices, providing support for staff located in both offices as well as other Golder offices as needed.
The Vancouver office is located in historic Gastown in a renovated heritage building. Numerous amenities are within easy walking distance. Nanaimo is centrally located with access to the many recreational and cultural activities on Vancouver Island as well as Vancouver. Job Qualifications
?Job Requirements:
The ideal candidate must have at least 3 years’ experience working with Geographic Information Systems, be highly creative and numerically literate, have strong organizational and problem-solving skills, be focused on providing high quality service and products, and have a track record of completing projects and tasks on time and with professionalism. An education or experience in urban planning and design, environmental or transportation planning or related disciplines is preferred. As you will be consistently working with clients and staff at various levels within our company, strong interpersonal skills are highly valued. Responsibilities include the following:
- Diploma and/or Undergraduate degree in related discipline, or comparable experience;
- 3 to 5 years of experience with geospatial technology is required;
- Experience using ESRI products and data formats, in particular ArcGIS version 10 and its associated extensions particularly spatial analyst, network analyst and 3D Analyst;
- Working knowledge of Python, and any other scripting languages used in GIS;
- Experience using ESRI ModelBuilder is required;
- Experience with problem-solving, statistics, and raster processing;
- Familiarity with a variety of spatial data types, formats, projections and datums;
- Understanding of quality control measures appropriate for information management and cartography;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Project and client focused with regard to timelines, team engagement, communication, and schedules; and
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

What is ArcGIS Online?


ArcGIS Online is a complete, cloud-based, collaborative content management system that lets organizations manage their geographic information in a secure and configurable environment. The platform provides an on-demand infrastructure for creating web maps, web-enabling your data, sharing your map, data, and applications, and managing content and multiple users from your organization. It includes basemaps, data for your maps, applications, configurable templates, and GIS tools and APIs for developers. Organizations purchase a subscription which allows them to configure and manage their own ArcGIS Online site and set of resources. A subscription includes organizational accounts for members of the organization. Personal accounts are available for individuals who want to access content shared by Esri and GIS users and create, store, and share maps, apps, and data.

What can you do with ArcGIS Online?

A subscription to ArcGIS Online allows organizations to manage their geospatial content in a secure environment, publish maps and data in Esri's secure cloud, configure their own ArcGIS Online website, and create maps and apps from APIs, templates, and tools. It also gives them resources to share and collaborate with its members and beyond the organization. Organizations can share their geospatial content and provide access to critical information while staying in control of their data.
