How to use Geology Download

Data Download allows you to download data files for all the British Geological Survey map data products that are available through Geology Digimap for use within GIS software packages.
Data Download works through a series of pages that guide you through the downloading process. These help pages describe the stages of that process in the order that you will come across them.
To see a short video of how to use Geology Download click on the image below:

A quick guide on how to download tiles of BGS data from the Geology Download part of Geology Digimap.

Geology Digimap is a service providing BGS maps and data to subscribing UK Higher and Further Education institutions.

Logging in

To be able to use Geology Download, you must log in with Personal Digimap Registration, not Class or Casual Reference Registration.
Geology Download can be accessed from the Geology Digimap homepage, select Geology Download. If the link is not available, the most likely cause is that you have logged into Geology Digimap using a Class or Casual Reference Registration. Please contact our help desk if you cannot get access to this service: edina@ed.ac.uk

Process

To download data you must work through the following stages:
  • Identify which scale product you are interested in.
  • Select which of the tiles you wish to download.
  • Select which layers you would like to download for the tiles you have selected.
  • Set the archiving and compression options for the download process.
  • Download the data to your computer.

Interface

At the top of every page in Data Download is a header bar which contains links to Help, Logout, and a bread crumb trail (on the left hand side) which will link to the Geology Digimap homepage. Below the links there is a Start Again button, which you can click this at any point to abandon your current search.
