Happy GIS Day 2013 to everone in your group!!

The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.
I wish a happy GIS day to everyone.

In June 2010, a violent crisis broke out in the Ferghana valley, Southern Kyrgyzstan, whereby close to 1,900 houses were burnt and approximately 400,000 people were displaced. Following a year of providing predominantly emergency assistance, 2011 has seen ACTED Kyrgyzstan continue to give emergency aid while also assisting in the recovery phase of the country's development. This has included involvement in health, education, and economic development - partly concerning food distributions and housing constructions for those whose homes were lost. Throughout, ACTED has supported the humanitarian agencies with REACH - an online interactive mapping tool that incorporates socioeconomic data and highlights potential sources of disputes.
Today, ACTED continues the shift from emergency and reconstruction towards peace-building, conflict mitigation, Disaster RiskReduction and long term development working with local communities.

- Gather macro-level data on political vulnerability, conflict drivers, socio-economic variables and media penetration from local & national authorities (Baseline wise in the North of Kyrgyzstan, and evolution wise in the whole country).
- Gather micro-level data with DCCA on past conflicts evolution and other potential vectors of conflict and disputes related to socio economic variables through focus groups and surveys in high priority conflict prone communities in Southern Kyrgyzstan. - Develop thematic investigations of three of the most common sources of tension between communities in Kyrgyzstan to determine the extent of these issues, the role that government authorities play in either resolving or accentuating them and their geographical components. - Establish together with GIS/REACH/UNOSAT teams an online interactive web interface for storing, analyzing and presenting conflict and socio economic data. - Together with the GIS/REACH/UNOSAT teams, integrate in the REACH online platform an interactive map of pasture-land and private forest ("leshoz") demarcations in the upper-altitude areas of Southern Kyrgyzstan an d provide them to the EWNs at the district level to help resolve conflicts over access to upper-altitude land at the local level and to the national-level EWN to use as a method of analyzing equity of access to these natural resources

    PCI Geomatics

RICHMOND HILL, Ontario, Canada—November 2, 2012: PCI Geomatics, a world leading developer of geo-imaging software and systems, today announces the release of the Linux versions of Geomatica 2013.Tthe company’s complete and integrated desktop image processing software becomes available for Red Hat, Ubuntu, and Suse starting today.

“Linux users represent an important segment of the geospatial community,” said Peter Hazlett, Product Manager for Geomatica. “We are pleased to bring the functionality of Geomatica 2013  to this segment of our user base to allow them to easily work with projects of hundreds to thousands of images in size quickly and easily.”

Geomatica 2013 adds incredible performance improvements to streamline your workflow like never before. Starting with Focus, new, wizard based workflows have been added for Atmospheric Correction that will allow users to automatically detect cloud and haze in imagery – which will make producing seamless mosaics in cloud plagued areas more intuitive. In OrthoEngine, users will see incredible improvements in handling large projects, including Quality Assurance panels that automatically update, Ground Control Point (and Tie Point) visualization, leading edge automated seamline generation, and the best algorithms to match images to each other automatically through new automatic ground control collection algorithms that can achieve registration accuracies down to 1/10th of a pixel!

Included in the Geomatica 2013 release is a set of new, redesigned algorithms to automatically extract Digital Elevation Models from single or up to hundreds of stereo pairs collected by high resolution sensors. In addition, creating DEMs from multi-source elevation data (billions of lidar points, contour lines, breaklines) is now possible through powerful new tools for DEM creation from vector data. All DEM generation algorithms have been implemented to leverage OpenMP, which means customers will see big performance improvements (3x to 4x faster than previous).

Geomatica 2013 is available for Red Hat 5, Ubuntu 10, and Suse 11 as well as multiple versions of Microsoft Windows (Windows XP//Windows 7/Server 2003/Server 2008). For more information on Geomatica 2013, please visit www.pcigeomatics.com/geomatica.
